Catalina Australian Shepherds

Are Aussies the right dog for you?

Australian Shepherds are an amazing breed -- intelligent, clever and devoted. Though not for every household, Aussies are extremely smart (often smarter than their owners -and the owners know it) and love to be with people. They enjoy having a job to do, even if it is just to walk their owners daily. Australian Shepherd‘s are devoted, loyal and love to please their owners. They are very easy to train and fun to work with.

Aussies typically live 12 to 15 years so buying a puppy is a long-term commitment.

With their name, Australian Shepherd, many people believe they originated in Australia, but Aussies are an American breed. There are many theories as to how they came about. The common thread through them is that their ancestors were herding dogs brought over with sheep flocks from Australia, Spain, and other areas to work sheep during the 1800’s.

Australian Shepherds are a herding breed but they also excel at Frisbee, agility, fly ball, obedience and conformation. Aussies are a breed for any and every event. Aussies need to be well socialized. I always recommend puppy kindergarten for my pups. This is as good for the owners as it is for the pup. Once the pups have had their second set of shots, I think it is great to take them everywhere you can. My dogs have been to soccer, baseball, football, cub scouts, picnics, hiking and many, many more places. Having your young dog out and about is a great way to continue their socialization while they learn manners.

If dog hair bothers you, you might want to consider another breed. Australian Shepherds are a double-coated breed and they do shed some all the time. Their coat is medium texture and can be straight to slightly wavy. Twice a year, each dog will blow their undercoat and basically “molt”. They need to be brushed daily at this time. The rest of the time, they don’t require a lot of grooming.

Australian Shepherds are easy going and they love to play. They are great with kids – if they have been properly socialized and introduced. I raise my puppies with children so they are excellent with children: however, I have seen many Aussies that have never been around kids that are not good with children. They are naturally protective, devoted, affectionate, and very loyal.

There are 4 colors – black, blue merle, red and red merle. They may or may not have white and/or copper trim or points. There are other variations that are not accepted colors by the Australian Shepherd Breed Standard.

Average Height for dogs is 20-23 inches and bitches are 18-21 inches. Average Weight for dogs is 50-65 pounds and bitches are 40-55 pounds.
